About IB program and IB admission

Year 1 of gymnasium in the IB diploma program is all about preparation. For a small number of students, it may be possible to jump over year 1 (preDP) and join directly in year 2 – the first year of the diploma program, or DP1.

Entrance into year 1 (preDP)

Year 1 of gymnasium in the IB diploma program is all about preparation. You will be together with your class for all your subjects. Your skills and academic abilities will be pushed, and you will be expected to work hard and perform to your best ability. You will also develop socially and culturally as you become accustomed to a new learning environment (some of your classmates may need to adapt to a new country, to a new city and/or to studying in a new language)

Note, in order to be eligible to join gymnasium year 1 you must fulfil ALL the following demands:

  • You have recently arrived in Sweden. Recent means within the past 2 years.
  • You have a minimum of 9 years completed studies from your home country (kindergarten is not studies).
  • You have a transcript (in English or Swedish) showing your grades from your previous two years of school.
  • You are at least 16 years of age, or about to turn 16, at the start of the new term (August).
  • You have passed both entrance tests as described below.

Two entrance tests for year one

To join year 1 (preDP) you will need to complete year 9 of Swedish school and gain “behörighet” or you need to complete two entrance tests. The entrance tests for entry into year one consists of two parts:

  • Part 1 is a Maths Exams, where your basic maths skills will be tested.

  • Part 2 is an English Exam, where your reading comprehension and writing skills will be tested.

Entrance into year 2 (DP1)

In order to join year 2 (DP1):

  • You have a minimum of 10 years completed studies from your home country (kindergarten is NOT studies)
  • You have a transcript (in English or Swedish) showing your grades from your previous two years of school.
  • You have, ideally, completed iGCSEs or equivalent, with good grades in 8 or more subjects.
  • You are at least 17 years of age, or about to turn 17, at the start of the new term (August).
  • You have a good understanding of what IB DP is all about.
  • You have communicated with the IB coordinator what your selected subjects are.
  • You have passed the entrance tests in the subjects, as agreed through communication with the IB coordinator.
